History of Rio Grande Valley Credit Union
February 12, 1954 – Articles of Incorporation are filed
The original charter included 112 employees of the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District. There were 7 Board of Directors. Entrance fee was .25 cents and one share was $5.00.
Asset size was $6,024.51.
The first manager was Peggy Roggenbuck, who volunteered as Treasurer until business began picking up at which time she was paid a salary.
June 1963
The Department of Banking issued a change to the original charter that allowed immediate family members of current members and employees of the Credit union to be eligible for membership.
June 1, 1964
E.J. Johnson was hired. She served as CEO until she retired on December 31, 1999. During her tenure, she took this Credit Union from a small one person operation to a full service financial institution with many services, employees and a branch office in San Benito. When Ms. Johnson began working at the Credit Union, her office was in a closet at the administration building for the Harlingen CISD. She was the only employee of the credit union.
1967
A new office was constructed on property donated by the Harlingen School District. The students of the building trades department participated in the construction of the credit union.
1976
San Benito Teachers’ Federal Credit Union merged with Harlingen Teachers’ Credit Union. In 1977 our present main office was built at 2910 E. Grimes.
1982
Our bylaws were amended to add all Public and Private schools within a 10 mile radius of Harlingen. This also included retired teachers. In 1985, Harbenito Federal Credit Union merged with Harlingen Teachers’ and our name was changed to Harlingen Area Teachers’ Credit Union Office was built at 2910 E. Grimes.
1986
Construction began on our current drive thru at our main office.
1989
Valley Baptist Medical Center was added to our field of membership.
October 1996
Branch office at 345 N. Williams Rd. in San Benito is opened.
January 1, 2000
Missy Morrow was promoted to CEO.
April 2000
ATM at San Benito branch is added.
November 2000
San Benito Drive-thru is opened.
February 2001
Student Loans become available.
July 2001
Debit cards become available.
November 2002
Interactive Website is added.
January 2003
RGVCU online becomes available.
March 2003
Financial Planner – Marc Hernandez, Money Concepts.
April 12, 2003
2nd branch in Harlingen at 4321 W. Expressway 83.
February 2004
Free bill pay becomes available.

Any person who lives, works, attends school or worships within a 10-mile radius of any credit union branch office is eligible.
January 2010
RGVCU join the Allpoint, America’s largest surcharge-free ATM network.

If you live, work, worships or attend school in Lyford or Raymondville – you are now eligible for membership with RGVCU.
RGVCU has continued to grow to our present asset size of approximately 76 million with over 16,500 members. We presently have over 40 employee.

Name was changed to Rio Grande Valley Credit Union.
October 16, 2015
Anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in Willacy County is eligible for membership.
February 1, 2016
Our new branch office in Lyford opened its doors for business.
January 12, 2017
Last day of business at 2910 E.Grimes in Harlingen.

Our New Main located 1221 Morgan Blvd. open its door for business.
September 24, 2019
We purchased a vacant bank at 117 E. Colorado in Rio Hondo, Texas. The building was remolded and established as a new branch office.
October 31, 2019
Merged Sugar Growers Federal Credit Union from Santa Rosa into our field of membership.
April 29, 2020
We installed an ATM at our Rio Hondo branch.
October 1, 2020
We opened our Rio Hondo Branch.
October 6, 2020
RGVCU installed a new ATM at our Lyford Branch.
May 1, 2022
Sherilyn Goad was approved by Board of Director to replace retiring CEO/President, Allyson “Missy” Morrow, effective August 2, 2023. Mrs. Morrow will retain title of CEO and Mrs. Goad will be President until August 2, 2023, when Mrs. Goad will become CEO/President.
